A PROMISE DOES NOT DELIVER: ASK GLOBAL LEADERS TO ACHIVE THE MDGS

Madrid 26th October 2008 – After the close of the High-Level Meeting on the Millennium Development Goals(MDGs) in New York, the Spanish Alliance Against Poverty evaluated the results and announced mobilizations for October 17, under the Rebélate contra la Pobreza slogan.

When evaluating the progress made at the Meeting, the Spanish Alliance representatives agreed with the UN Secretary General’s remarks pointing out the need to shift into high gear for an aggressive push to get the world on track to reach the Goals by the target date of 2015.

Regarding President Mr. José Luis Rodriguez Zapatero’s participation in the High Level Meeting, Alliance members evaluated as positive the re-statement of the commitment to devote 0.7 percent of Gross National Income to Overseas Development Assistance by 2012 but reminded the Spanish Government of the need to make progress on aid effectiveness, debt relief and trade issues as well.

Considering the critical moment the world has reached in the campaign to achieve the MDGs, the Spanish Alliance has called for a massive mobilization of individuals to tell world leaders that they expect them to deliver on their promises. The Rebélate contra la Pobreza initiative will take place on October 17-18 in more than 50 cities in Spain. To support this mobilization initiative, the Spanish Alliance against Poverty has developed an advertising campaign in partnership with Grey Spain. The campaign focuses on the idea that a promise does not deliver.
