Adoption of the Resolution on Millenium Declaration by the Assembly of Kosovo

At 11:00 AM, On 17th October, 2008, the Assembly of Kosovo supported by the UN Kosovo Team aproved a Resolution by which they endorse the Millenium Declaration of the 2000 MDG Summit. This Solemn Plennary Session was marked by remarkable speeches of the President of Kosovo, Mr. Sejdiu, the Prime Minister, Mr. Thaqi and the Speaker of the Assembly, Mr. Krasniqi, as well as the High level Speaker, Mr. Guido Schmidt Traub, ex. Vice director of the Millenium Campaign. Heads of institutions stressed that they will offer political, financial and stretegic support in reaching the MDGs by 2015. The High level Speaker in this public advocacy of his initative, mentioned that the institutions have the responsibililty to undertake concrete and long term steps in achieving MDGs. Around 150 participants clapped for one minute on this event. At 2:00 PM, University of Prishtina, hosted an open lecture between Mr. Guido Schmidt-Traub and the Unviersity students on the MDGs and the Poverty Week. This event stressed the importance of youth in it development processes in Kosovo as one of it’s main assets (more than 45% of polulation is under 25 YO). At 8:00 PM, on the 17th October, 2008; UNKT together with Art Polis NGO, co-hosted a regional play called BAllkan Stories. It was a no words play with artists from the region, showing violation of human rights, from different angles. More than 150 guests from teh Govrenmental institutions, Civil Society, Liaison Offices and the Un Agencies were present at the show. 18th October, 2008, a football tournament for middle school children was organized in Gjakova. As a powerful and valuable means for peace and development, football is indisputably the most popular sport activity on the planet, able to bridge the gaps between cultures and peoples and to speak a global language of joy, friendship and solidarity. Meanwhile, a school in the same town embarked on a sister-school program with the Metropolitan High School in Providence, Rhode Island. The main activity of the program comprises of a shared curriculum on Millennium Development Goals. Around forty students are involved in the program. The NGO One World Youth Project, supported the event.
