AIMS:
The aim of this conference is to get Akwa Ibom Youths familiar with the Millennium Development Goals (MDGS) and getting them exposed to basic ICT skills in that process to aid collaboration, networking and sustainable youth-led initiatives for a better future.
OBJECTIVES:
The main objective of this conference is to raise awareness about the Millennium Development Goals (MDGS), provide space for youth to express their views and share experiences related to MDGs issues, enable young people to interact with their leaders, and facilitate networking between youth groups to crystallize new projects.
METHODOLOGY:
Every participant to the conference will have to apply. Application forms can either be downloaded on the Internet or through a physical address. On due screening, participants will be invited and notified on time for early preparations. The conference will kick-start following the line up of programmes which will include paper presentations, talk shows, comic relief, Art and Crafts exhibition, group discussions, Questions and Answers sessions and lots more.
African Youths Enlightenment Society (A.Y.E.S) will be working in partnership with NYSC members serving in all the Local Governments across the state working also on Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) who will serve as supervisors the MDGs clubs to be inaugurated at the end of the conference. Each MDGs Club is formed with an obligation to research on the impact of MDGs on young people in local communities across the state, create awareness on MDGs, educate young people to actively participate or contribute to Policy processes thus, increasing youths access and participation.
To sustain this initiative, African Youths Enlightenment Society (A.Y.E.S) will establish a follow-up strategy by training group leaders and other volunteers for a period of six(6) months on latest development, basic ICT skills, Advocacy and Awareness, Youths and conflict, Sustainability development, youth policies, partnerships with cities and local authorities, youth financing, best practices and mentorship etc.
This initiative will provide a long-lasting and effective dividend towards meeting the MDGs through building social capital for development to 2015 and beyond.
MAJOR CONCEPTS:
This conference will be divided into three parts.
1. The first part will outline how youths are involved in decision-making processes in government bodies and civil society organizations. The level of participation ranges from effective to non-existent.
2. The second part will go into detail on each Goal and will describe how young people are affected by the Goal, how young people are already contributing to the Goals, and what can be done to increase youth access and participation in achieving the Goals. Concrete suggestions for how Ministries, States, National and International institutions can get more young people involved will also be researched.
3. The third and final part of the conference will contain general recommendation and focuses on how young people can get involved with the Goals through raising awareness, taking part in policy decisions, taking action, networking and collaboration. Group activities will also be carried out.
CONFERENCE REPORTS:
Reports of this conference will outline how young people can be included and empowered as part of the strategies Akwa Ibom State Government are creating for the achievement of the MDGs. It will also be used as a lobby tool and guide for programmatic action, but ultimately, it is to call all arms of the Government and civil societies to create mechanisms for youths to participate in the implementation of the MDGs and take advantage of the work and activities youths are already leading.
