Japan Joins Stand Up
This picture was created by NGO groups and youths in Tokyo’s Yoyogi Park. They formed the words ‘Stand Up’ by holding flash lights under umbrellas.
In Japan, an estimated 27,000 people stood up right before an International Footbaal match in the Nagai Stadium in Osaka. UN employees circulated ecobags to everyone in the audience with a print of the Stand Up logo.
Two Olympic medalists sent in video messages, and the first lacrosse female professional came in person to deliver a heartwarming speech. Celebrities, youth and many others attended.
Around 150 people, including UN staff and their friends, attended the Stand Up at the UN house during the lunch break in Tokyo, including UN Agency Heads who read the Stand up pledge in turns.
A several hundred students stood up at the Komaba campus of University of Tokyo, as well as at the Kokusai University. The event was preannounced in several newspapers, and TV, radio and newspapers.

The final figure of people Standing Up is a massive total of 43,716,440 participants in at least 6,540 events around the globe spanning 127 countries. They broke the world record - set last year at 23.5 million - for the largest number of people to “Stand Up Against Poverty” in 24 hours.
