Stand up and speak out against poverty!
Event Goal:

Date of Event:
Oct 17 2008 8:00am - 7:00pm

“Stand up and speak out against poverty” will make visible the causes of global poverty, actions and commitment that are taken or can be taken to alleviate poverty.

The action comes as a follow-up of the pilot event ran in Cluj-Napoca in 2007 by PATRIR and World Vision. Stands and street animation in one of the main Squares in Cluj-Napoca: Piata Pacii will be presented by PATRIR and the partner organisations.

At 18.30 all the supporters of this action will make a “stand up” moment to express the solidarity with the other people in the world and their awarness on the MDG topic and commitment to take a stand against the perpetuation of worldwide poverty.

With the aim of marking the connections between different actors and also create a sense o synergy between their different actions at least at the local level, we framed a round table at Babes Bolyai Universiy. This activity gathers civil society actors (NGOs, academia, schools) that are or could be involved in the international development cooperation, development education and awarness raising on the themses of the MDGs in order to discuss: best practicies, possibilities and potential impact of their actions on this theme. To this event were present: Mr.Alan Attryde, the First Secretary of the British Embassy in Bucharest, Ms. Anamaria Almasan Deputy Director of the ODA Department of the Romanian MFA, Ms. Cristina Vaileanu, Project Manager UNDP, Mr. Kai Jacobsen, Director PATRIR, Mr. Gabriel Badescu Chair of the Political Science Faculty, UBB University and Mr. Sorin Apostu, Vice-Mayor Cluj-Napoca.

In the week preceeding the 17th of October a group of PATRIR and World Vision staff and volunteers will run workshops with different teachers in 10 schools in Cluj-Napoca presenting the significance of the day, student initiatives on MDGs across Europe and the impact that every day actions have on education, the situation of women, basic health and poverty. This action encouraged teachers to continue presenting these themes in other optional modules included in the school curricula. On the 17th of October the teachers will use the materials and knowledge of the workshops to run lessons on the theme of the MDGs, particulary poverty reduction and some of them will then join us for the ‘“stand up” moment at 18.30 in Piata Pacii.

As a last but not least event in order to display the engagement of a prosperous and forward looking city like Cluj-Napoca to the MDGs and themes of global interest, we invite the Mayor to have an intervention on this theme.
