Bloggers and Social Networks Rally for Stand Up
It started with blogger Whurley, who urged all fellow bloggers to spread the word. “I'm calling all Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, and blogosphere friends and friends of friends to fire up their keyboards. Get posting, poking, and writing on walls,” he said.
And so they did. In the blogger sphere, Stand Up promotion has taken off in the last weeks. Blogger Steve Carl responded to Whurley’s call and said: “It may seem like blogging and twittering and all is not going to be enough to get a problem this large fixed anytime soon, but the power of the Internet is an amazing thing, and raising awareness is always the first step to making real, lasting change.”
To promote the global call against poverty, the UN Millennium Campaign and GCAP have used all possibilities of the Internet. Online video directors were asked to develop videos to promote the initiative on popular websites such as YouTube as well as on smaller niche websites such as Moviestorm.co.uk, which specializes in videos using video game animations. YouTube ‘featured’ UN Stand Up clip has reached over 2000 views (and counting).
Social networking sites also became an essential tool in helping to promote Stand Up and Speak Out. Users could add the Stand Up logo inside of their profile pictures. On Facebook, 2000 people have already added this application.
For the first time this year, participants can participate in Stand Up from their own home, alone of with a group of friends—by registering their Stand Up effort online. Or, as Whurley suggested, in a BarCamp-like event in online communities around the globe, (BarCamp is an international network of open, participatory workshop-events) He already started the wiki.
